In order to cross the ocean of suffering in samsara, one should rely on a guide, a glorious lama. That lama possesses skillful means and immeasurable compassion, has a treasury of sutras and tantras like a wish-fulfilling jewel, and guides beings. A lama who is free from faults and complete with qualities is like a real Buddha in this degenerate age. Rely on him with great respect and service. A lama who is complete with inherent qualities is of noble lineage, has a sense of shame and embarrassment, and complete faculties. He has love and compassion, vast wisdom, great learning, is disciplined in body, speech, and mind, and has great patience. He is honest and sincere, without hypocrisy or deceit. Rely on him as the crown of a hundred faiths, like a wish-fulfilling jewel. The supreme lama who is liberated from worldly existence has abandoned his homeland and worldly affairs. He has little attachment to unnecessary natural wealth and material possessions. He believes in cause and effect and discriminates between good and bad, accepting and rejecting accordingly. He gives up this life and accomplishes great deeds for the long term. He engages in meaningful activities of the Great Vehicle and skillfully benefits beings. Having examined and verified, rely on the glorious Lord of Dharma. Always stay close and rely on him without discouragement. A lama with vast wisdom and good fortune is omniscient in all fields of knowledge, and his mandala of knowledge is vast. He has great learning and contemplation, and is skilled in the words and meanings of various philosophical systems. His view and conduct are excellent, and no one can criticize him. He possesses scripture and reason, and is free from fabrication and bias. He examines the minds of those to be tamed and then teaches the Dharma, being a guide on the path to enlightenment, with eyes of wisdom. Go to the precious island of liberation and rely on him with reverence. A lama who possesses the blessings of the lineage pleases his predecessors and holds the lineage of accomplished ones. Having attained the treasury of the mind, he possesses the whispered lineage instructions. Through practice, he is skilled in accomplishing the two benefits. By diligently practicing, he attains clouds of siddhis. He can transform the appearances of others and guide them on the path to liberation. He has an unbroken lineage of sutras and tantras, and his vows are pure. Rely on such a wise and accomplished protector with reverence. A lama who guides the path with compassion has developed bodhicitta and always engages in benefiting others. Blessings enter him, and he blesses the appearances of others. His view, meditation, conduct, and results have experience and warm signs. He has great power and eliminates obstacles from demons and evil spirits. 【漢語翻譯】 作為依處莊嚴恭敬依止， 指示究竟心要義的上師， 與所繫者皆結解脫深義。 甚深道以心要令遇自性法身， 甚深加持令覺受增上， 究竟證悟令安住實相之基。 甚深方便道令任何皆轉為道用， 具多教誨善巧解脫識續， 能於此生度脫輪迴之河的， 導師如意寶醫王， 超勝一切故無等恭敬依止。 如是所說功德勝妙中， 具足一切之上師如烏曇婆羅花， 大體具足者亦如佛陀， 具足六分者亦可依止， 因於此濁世極難得故， 當以極大恭敬而依止。 勸誡無離恒常依止者， 乃是究竟之意趣解脫深道。 除上師外誰亦不能宣說， 是故恒常當依止上師。 指示取捨善惡甚深之要， 遣除痛苦疾病消除無明黑暗， 開啟智慧之眼照亮解脫道， 除上師外無有故恒常依止。 成就解脫道亦依賴二資糧圓滿， 彼之所依亦無勝於上師者， 有天世間一切皆無故， 于殊勝福田恭敬恒常依止。 為救脫惡趣之苦及障礙怖畏等， 亦無他者是殊勝之救護， 因佛陀亦依止上師故， 為脫離惡趣怖畏故亦恒常依止。 亦無他者能圓滿功德， 因依止上師更增殊勝故， 為令初中后皆得解脫之， 功德財富故以極大恭敬而依止。 尤于濁世較之慈愛上師， 我無他者可為導師故， 較之勝者以更大恭敬而依止。 彼亦應往詣具德殊勝上師， 所居之處的方向， 以具足信心恭敬承侍廣大， 從初始即令歡喜如法尋覓。 尋得后當無厭倦而依止， 為成辦大利以極大耐心恭敬而親近。 彼時違緣眾多之故， 于生起厭煩退卻多思之時， 當知是魔而捨棄。

The profound method transforms anything into the path, Possessing many instructions, skilled in liberating the knowledge stream, Able to ferry across the river of Samsara in this life, The captain, the wish-fulfilling king of medicine, Is superior to all, therefore relying with incomparable reverence. Among the supreme qualities as described, The Lama who possesses all is like the Udumbara flower, One who possesses most is like the Buddha, One who possesses about six qualities is also worthy of reliance, Because in this degenerate age they are extremely difficult to find, One should rely on them with great reverence. The advice to rely on them constantly without separation, Is the profound path of liberation, the ultimate intention. No one other than the Lama can show it, Therefore, one should always rely on the Lama. Showing the essential points of abandoning evil and adopting virtue, Dispelling the suffering of illness, dispelling the darkness of ignorance, Opening the eye of wisdom, illuminating the path of liberation, There is no other than the Lama, therefore always rely on them. Accomplishing the path of liberation also depends on the completion of the two accumulations, And there is no greater support for that than the Lama, Because there is none in all the worlds with gods, Always rely with reverence on the supreme field of merit. For the sake of saving from the states of misery and the fears of obstacles, There is no other supreme refuge, Because even the Buddha relied on the Lama, Always rely on them for freedom from the fear of wrong paths. There is also no other who can perfect qualities, Because relying on the Lama is more excellent than that, For the sake of attaining the qualities of liberation in the beginning, middle, and end, Rely with great reverence. Especially in this degenerate age, other than the loving Lama, There will be no other who can be my teacher, Therefore, rely with greater reverence than on the Victorious Ones. Furthermore, go to the place and direction Where the glorious and holy Lama resides, With great faith, reverence, and service, From the very beginning, please them and seek them properly. Having found them, rely on them without weariness, To accomplish great benefit, draw near with great patience and reverence. At that time, because there are many unfavorable conditions, When thoughts of discouragement, turning away, and many thoughts arise, Recognize them as demons and abandon them.

【漢語翻譯】 而且以極大的恭敬， 如獲至寶般頂戴不捨。 猶如濁水澄清后， 倒影清晰，無垢之寶珠。 清凈障垢之水，顯現功德之倒影， 如石中之金，地下之珍寶。 如蓮花中安住之善逝， 示現遍主清凈之菩提心。 如黑夜中的光明， 如引向解脫洲的舵手。 進入深邃水藏之源。 因此，應當依止聖者。 如苦行之臂膀，勇士國王， 如導師、醫生、助益之友。 應精勤依止善知識， 如此則現世來世皆安樂，成就佛法。 以自身所有令師歡喜， 因佛法之功德無可衡量。 圓滿資糧，平息障礙，具足財富， 迅速獲得菩提寂靜之果。 略作奉獻，勿誇大圖利， 勿與他比，勿生後悔。 為此乃成就今生來世大事之方便， 以諸善供養，恒時恭敬承侍。 亦以殊勝之行儀令師歡喜， 身行頂禮、繞轉、供養。 守護障礙，聽令差遣，承侍， 起立、鋪設坐墊，給予各種敬重。 應斷除不敬無禮之行為， 如審視谷堆，皺眉，拍手。 背向側立，伸展手足， 躺臥交談，爭鬥打鬧，嬉戲調情。 吐痰涕，跨越影子， 離去時不告辭，於前行走，踐踏足跡。 使用鞋履坐墊，騎乘物，財物， 于上師量身，跨越衣物坐墊。 應斷除不敬無知之過失。 語亦以美妙之語讚頌皈依， 以柔和悅耳之語，輔以敬語侍奉。 如教奉行，凡所言說皆應答「是」。 亦應向他人宣揚上師之功德， 以美妙之音聲，滿懷虔誠祈禱。 應斷除各種語之不善。 于上師前，妄語、離間語， 粗語、雜語、綺語、戲謔之語。 違背教言，面露不悅，斷人希望，背後誹謗， 詰難等等，應斷除語之垢染。 意念上師之功德
【英語翻譯】 Moreover, with utmost reverence, Cherish the found jewel, placing it on the crown of your head. Just as from turbid water, once clear, A reflection appears, like a flawless jewel. The clear water of obscurations reveals the reflection of qualities, Like gold in stone and precious treasures underground. Just as the Sugata dwells within the lotus, Show the all-pervading, pure essence of Bodhicitta. Like light in the darkness of night, Like a helmsman guiding towards the island of liberation. Enter the source of the deep water treasure. Therefore, one should rely on the holy ones. Like the arm of asceticism, a warrior king, Like a teacher, a doctor, a helpful friend. Strive to rely on a virtuous spiritual friend, Thereby achieving happiness and well-being in this and future lives, fulfilling the Dharma. Pleasing the guru with what one possesses, For the merits of the Dharma are immeasurable. Completing accumulations, pacifying obstacles, possessing wealth, Quickly attaining the peace of enlightenment. Offering a little, do not boast of profit, Do not compare with others, do not regret. For this is the means to accomplish great matters in this and future lives, Worship with all good things, always serve with reverence. Also, please the guru with excellent conduct, With body, prostrate, circumambulate, offer worship. Protect against obstacles, obey commands, serve, Rise, spread the seat, give various respects. Abandon disrespectful and careless behaviors, Like scrutinizing a grain heap, frowning, clapping hands. Turning the back or side, stretching limbs, Lying down and chatting, fighting and quarreling, playing and flirting. Spitting and blowing the nose, stepping over shadows, Leaving without permission, walking ahead, trampling footprints. Using shoes, cushions, riding animals, and possessions, Measuring the guru's body, stepping over clothes and seats. Abandon such disrespectful and ignorant faults. Also, with sweet words, praise and take refuge, With gentle and pleasant words, accompanied by respectful service. Act according to teachings, and say "Yes" to whatever is said. Also, proclaim the guru's qualities to others, With melodious voice, pray with devotion. Abandon all kinds of negative speech. In the presence of the guru, lying, divisive speech, Harsh words, gossip, idle talk, jesting words. Disobeying instructions, showing displeasure, cutting off hope, slandering behind the back, Questioning, etc., abandon the defilements of speech. With mind, remember the guru's qualities.

【漢語翻譯】 並且，以極大的虔誠和恭敬對待難以遇到的菩提心。 效仿並尊敬其他眾生。 拋棄不信任、邪見、憤怒， 總是挑剔、輕蔑， 競爭、傷害、傲慢， 持有與行為相悖的觀念和不信任， 貪婪、害人之心和邪見。 如教導般依教奉行是供養， 應當思維所聽聞的殊勝意義， 前往森林深處，努力于精要之義。 以修行度日，繼承上師的傳承。
修持具德上師的傳記， 思維身語意的功德， 我亦從今起效仿他的足跡， 爲了獲得聖者的果位， 努力于聞思修。 如是經由多種方便， 依止上師的功德無量， 領悟正確的道路，區分取捨， 圓滿資糧，清凈業障，障礙完全平息， 自己也獲得聖者的地位， 迅速到達解脫之城。 出自大乘竅訣論典《如意寶藏》，依止善知識品第八。

【英語翻譯】 And, with great devotion and reverence, treat the Bodhicitta that is difficult to encounter. Emulate and respect other beings as well. Abandon disbelief, wrong views, anger, Always finding fault, contempt, Competition, harm, arrogance, Holding views contrary to actions and disbelief, Greed, harmful intent, and wrong views. Following the teachings as instructed is offering, One should contemplate the sublime meanings that have been heard, Go to the depths of the forest and strive for the essential meaning. Passing the time with practice, upholding the lineage of the previous masters.
Also, practicing the biography of the glorious Lama, Contemplating the qualities of body, speech, and mind, From today onwards, I too will follow in his footsteps, In order to attain the state of a holy being, Strive diligently in hearing, contemplation, and meditation. Thus, through various skillful means, The benefits of relying on a Lama are limitless, Comprehending the correct path, distinguishing what to adopt and abandon, Completing the accumulations, purifying obscurations, obstacles completely pacified, Oneself also attaining the state of a holy person, Swiftly reaching the city of liberation.
